She is the only actress for whom Manish Arora Designs. She is a style icon and is known for her dressing sense.Iconic fashion designer Victoria Beckham once tweeted about how great one of her dresses looked on “beautiful Sonam”. She is known as a blabbermouth and speaks her mind and is candid about herself as well as others. And, she seems to draw brands like a magnet. Yet, when it comes to movies, actor Sonam Kapoor has little to boast about. Kapoor made her debut in 2007 in the much-hyped Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Saawariya opposite Ranbir Kapoor. She has done six movies since — Delhi-6, Aisha, I Hate Luv Storys, Mausam, Players and Thank You. Four of the six were duds at the box office, one (I Hate Luv Storys) was a hit, while another (Aisha) did average business. So, what is it about Sonam Kapoor that, in spite of a mediocre career graph, she remains one of the most talked about actors in Bollywood?
Her latest movie Khoobsurat is said to bring her career graph back on track. “Khoobsurat” is the 2014 remake of 1980’s film of the same name starring Rekha, Rakesh Roshan and Dina Pathak. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and N.C. Sippy. Khoobsurat won that year’s Filmfare Best Movie Award and Rekha won the Best Actress Award. The movie was a phenomenal success remembered even today for Rekha’s vivacious and caring role.
This year’s remake of the movie stars our very own version of Audrey Hepburn, Sonam Kapoor alongside Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Afzal Khan. Also present are Ratna Pathak Shah, yes daughter of the same Dina Pathak who played the role of the strict, rule abiding Nirmala Gupta in the original version. Khoobsurat is directed by debutante Shashanka Ghosh and produced by Anil Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapur. There is however a slight twist and a modern take to the story this time. Sonam Kapoor plays the role of a Physiotherapist who is free, jovial, loud, funny and fashionable (can’t miss this one when its Sonam!) and Fawad plays the role of a Rajput prince. Everybody in the Rathore household are enamored by Nirmala Devi Rathore and religiously abide by everything she says or rather, orders. Khoobsurat is a story of how two distinctly polar and opposite individuals fall in love with each other.
Style cannot be left behind in a Sonam Kapoor movie! That is too obvious to deny! After Aisha where Sonam was styled in uber fashion brands and exquisite designer labels on the lines of Chnel, Salvatore Ferragamo and Christian Dior styled personally by Pernia Qureshi however Sonam’s style in Khoobsurat is slightly on the sober side to give her a ‘misfit’ look. This is the second time that the Kapoor trio are coming together with a project, the last one being Aisha which did not do too well at the box-office. Aisha was also shrouded with loads of controversies, one of which being the famous fallout between Sonam and Abhay Deol, the latter claiming he would never work with the Kapoors again! Pretty hot stuff that was!
It is yet to see how this film fares at the box office and what’s in its fate?! Only the film’s release can tell! Movie will hit the screens by 19th September 2014.
