Not all biopics are documentaries and not all documentaries are biopics . In the world of films , there is a huge difference between biopics and documentaries , a difference that the audience seem to miss out more than often .
There has been a recent debate and confusion on the fact whether the upcoming film, ‘Mary Kom’ which is based on the five time world champion and olympic bronze medalist Boxer from India , Mary Kom . The film sees Priyanka Chopra play the lead role as the character of ‘Mary Kom’ . The movie shows Mary Kom’s journey of struggles and her comeback into boxing glory post motherhood .
A biopic is a film or a movie that is biographical in nature or one that dramatizes the life of a real person. It is also very often defined as a ‘biographical movie’ .
It is not a movie that is BASED on a true story but rather a movie that tries to tell the LIFE STORY of an individual or a very important period of their life .
A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record . Such films were originally shot on film stock—the only medium available—but now includes video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video, made into a TV show or released for screening in cinemas. “Documentary” has been described as a “film making practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception” that is continually evolving and is without clear boundaries .
Hence from the above facts it is clear that the film ‘Mary Kom’ is a biopic and not a documentary which shows a certain part of Mary Kom’s life and the details and little aspects of that part of her life .
However , it has not been easy for bollywood and biopic movies to become compatible and merging this combination is a tough task to say the least . However over the years , Many film makers are venturing into the field of making biopics and have found great success in there too . Films like Chak De India and The Dirty Picture have been revolutionary biopics that the industry have produced and seemed to connect with audiences immediately . The biopic with the most success yet is certainly Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which was based on a phase of Milkha Singh , the flying sikhs’s life . Mary Kom however is the first ever woman driven biopic with Piggy Chops playing a woman centric role .
The film is directed by debut director Omung Kumar and to support Priyanka Chopra , actor Darshan Kumar has played the role Mary Kom’s husband , while on debut as well . The movie has had a successful trailer launch and the songs have created a buzz among the people too , and it is ready to release on 5th September , 2014 .
